During the Advent season, there is a rise in walnut demand due to their use in festive desserts and their nutritional benefits. Walnuts are rich in vitamins, minerals, fiber, and essential amino acids, and are known to prevent cardiovascular diseases and improve brain function. They are also used in folk medicine. However, the demand for Hungarian walnuts has decreased on export markets due to competition from Chilean, Australian, French, and Chinese walnuts. To improve this, the cultivation technology needs to be modernized, and there needs to be a shift towards high-yielding plantations. The new Agricultural-Environmental Management scheme starting in January 2025 could encourage the renewal of domestic walnut plantations.
