(Sejong=Yonhap News) Reporter Lee Jun-seo = Statistics Korea reported on the 9th that the production of spring potatoes this year was 356,000 tons, a decrease of 42,000 tons (10.5%) compared to last year.
The planting area decreased by 594 hectares (3.8%) from 15,521 hectares last year to 14,927 hectares this year due to the price drop in March (planting season).
The production per 10 are (10 are = 1,000 square meters) also decreased this year to 2,383 kilograms, a decrease of 179 kilograms (7.0%) compared to last year (2,562 kilograms). Statistics Korea explained that this was due to low-temperature damage during the growth period (April) and insufficient sunlight during the enlargement period (May).
By province, North Gyeongsang Province produced 65,000 tons, accounting for 18.3% of the total. This was followed by South Chungcheong with 58,000 tons (16.4%) and Gangwon with 48,790 tons (13.6%).
