(Sejong=Yonhap News) Reporter Lee Sewon = The production of autumn cabbage and autumn radish has reached the lowest level ever this year due to the impact of frequent rains. According to the '2025 Cultivated Area (Confirmed) and Crop Production Volume Survey Results' report released by the Korea Data Agency (formerly the Statistics Korea) on the 24th, the production volume of autumn cabbage this year was 1,024,000 tons, a decrease of 140,000 tons (12.0%) from last year (1,164,000 tons). This year's autumn cabbage production is the lowest since the survey began in 1975. Although the cultivated area was 0.8% larger than last year, the production volume per 10 ares (1 are = 100 square meters) decreased by 12.7% due to frequent rains during the growth period, ultimately leading to a decrease in total production. The production volume of autumn radish was 374,000 tons, a decrease of 10,000 tons (2.7%) from last year (384,000 tons). Like autumn cabbage, this year's autumn radish production is the lowest since 1975. It was also affected by frequent heavy rainfall, and the production volume per 10 ares decreased by 11.3%. An official from the Korea Data Agency explained, "There was frequent rain in September this year, to the extent that it was called an autumn rainy season. The number of rainy days was about 5 to 6 days more than usual." "High rainfall can hinder the growth of radishes and cabbage." Apple production was 448,000 tons, a decrease of 12,000 tons (2.6%), and pear production was 197,000 tons, an increase of 19,000 tons (10.7%). The production volume of apples was affected by a 3.7% decrease in cultivated area due to the shift in varieties due to climate change and damage from forest fires in the spring. Although the cultivated area of pears decreased by 2.4%, the production volume per 10 ares increased by 13.4%, which helped to raise the overall production results. Soybean production was 156,000 tons, an increase of 1,000 tons (0.8%).
