The tobacco campaign has begun with delayed planting due to rainfall, in a year when increased production is expected, with more cultivated hectares and better prices for farmers, who are facing challenges with labor shortages and limitations on pesticide use.
The director of the Tobacco Interprofessional Organization of Spain (Oitab), Fernando Vaquero, told Efeagro that this campaign "could be a good year in quantity and quality," as around 6,400 hectares are expected to be dedicated in Spain—nearly 98% in northern Cáceres—compared to 6,018 hectares in 2024.
As in all campaigns, Oitab has compiled the pre-harvest contracting data from last March: the nearly one thousand farmers who have decided to grow tobacco this year estimate selling 23,077,673 kilos.
This figure, which like in previous years will be revised in June, represents 840,039 kilos more than in 2024, which is equivalent to an increase of 3.77%.
