Tomato production in the Netherlands is recovering from a period of decline due to viruses and high energy costs, with summer production nearly returning to normal levels. Winter production is projected to quadruple from 40,000 tonnes to 180,000 tonnes, mainly from vine tomatoes. However, the European Union's tomato market faces challenges, including competition from imports, rising production costs, and sustainability requirements. Production volumes have declined by 700,000 tonnes over the past decade, while imports have only increased by 400,000 tonnes. Consumers in places like Germany are willing to pay higher prices for quality tomatoes. European producers are encouraged to innovate, collaborate, and adapt to consumer expectations of sustainability to remain competitive.
