Farmers in the Barind region are successfully cultivating tomatoes, experiencing high yields and market prices, despite the Covid-19 pandemic. The region has become famous for its tomato farming, which has also created job opportunities and potentially improved the socio-economic condition of the poor if marketing and environment-friendly technologies are ensured. Over 5,500 hectares of land were dedicated to tomato farming this year, with farmers earning between Tk 45,000 to Tk 50,000 per bigha. However, the high cost of tomatoes is making it unaffordable for lower and lower middle-income people. The lack of storage facilities is also leading to the perishment of thousands of tonnes of tomatoes every year.
