Bulgaria's tobacco harvest is expected to be smaller this year due to decreased production of Oriental and Virginia tobacco varieties, with a 8.2% and 31.7% drop, respectively, primarily due to dry summer conditions and reduced cultivation. Despite these challenges, farmers anticipate high-quality yields. The Burley tobacco harvest has seen a 30.6% increase, offsetting the loss. The total harvest figures will be known upon conclusion of the purchase campaign. The National Association of Tobacco Producers is advocating for the quality of tobacco as a key factor, especially with the rise of smokeless tobacco products. There is pending political negotiation regarding the extension of transitional national aid until 2027, which would provide support to registered tobacco producers.
