Portugal's canned fish industry experienced a 28% increase in value and a 25% increase in volume in 2022, generating a national production of 468 million euros. Tuna is the most produced and exported preserve, accounting for nearly half of the sector's total and 40% of total exports. Over 60% of production is exported, primarily to Spain and France, with the USA and Italy having the highest sales price per kilogram. The industry faces challenges in hiring local labor and has implemented policies to improve working conditions and offer scholarships for technical and higher education. Portugal's canned fish sector employs 3,500 people, mostly women, and is responsible for 36 species and over 800 references.
