Turkey has more bovine and ovine animals, including cattle and sheep, than any European Union (EU) country, according to recent statistical data from Eurostat and the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK). In 2022, the EU's cattle population decreased to 74.86 million from 75.705 million the previous year, with France having the largest herd. Turkey's cattle population was 17,240, making it the top country. The EU's sheep and goat population was 70 million, led by Spain, while Turkey's was 56,266,000 with a significant margin due to its sheep numbers. Greece led in the EU's goat population with 3.46 thousand, but Turkey had a larger goat population of 11,578,000, surpassing the total of EU countries.
