In November, the UK saw a slight decrease in fresh meat imports, accounting for 66.3% of total imports, with a slight increase in frozen meat imports from the EU. There has been a shift towards more frozen beef imports in the UK, increasing its market share from around 32% in 2019-2021, up to more than 37% in 2022. Export volumes of fresh and frozen beef for November remained stable, but there was a decrease of more than 700 tonnes compared to last year, due to reduced shipments to Hong Kong and Japan. Year to date, exports were over 21,000 tonnes higher than in 2021, with increased trade seen with the EU and other nations such as Canada. The split of fresh and frozen beef exported is beginning to return to pre-pandemic and pre-Brexit levels, with fresh products accounting for 69.8% of exports.
