The European Council has imposed sanctions on Russia, which includes a ban on the export of high-end wines and spirits, except for those from Italy, with a limit of 300 euros per bottle. However, the sanctions have also led to a decrease in Italian agri-food exports to Russia by 1.4 billion euros in the last 8 years due to an embargo on fruit, vegetables, cheeses, meats, and cured meats. The new sanctions come at a time when Italian agriculture is already facing challenges such as the war in Ukraine, increasing energy, diesel, and fertilizer costs, and stock shortages of feed. The Italian farmers' association, Cia-Agricoltori Italiani, is calling for urgent interventions from institutions to help the sector navigate the crisis.
