The cost structure of fish products in recirculating aquaculture systems is heavily influenced by feed costs, which constitute nearly 50% of expenses, compared to 26% in pond farms, as reported by the State Fisheries Agency. Of the fish feed, 42% is imported, 20% is domestically produced in Ukraine, and the rest is derived from grain waste and grain for carp species. In 2023, imported feed was predominantly used for carp (31%) and salmon (30%), with sturgeon and catfish species using 21% and 19% respectively. On a global scale, fish feed production surpasses 1.2 billion tons, with the top 10 producing countries, led by China, accounting for 64% of this output.
