The ongoing conflict in Ukraine, led by Russia, has raised concerns about the stability of Europe's food supplies, as Ukraine is a key producer and exporter of various crops such as sunflower, barley, and corn, and also a significant supplier of fish, crustaceans, molluscs, and canned vegetables to Spain. The conflict could lead to increased prices for these goods, especially cereals, as Spain is a major importer of Ukrainian cereals. The Spanish food and drink industry, which exports valued at 33,945 million euros and had a trade surplus of 12,608 million euros in 2021, is apprehensive about the potential economic impact on the industry due to the conflict, particularly with regards to the import of raw materials and the broader energy market.
