Researchers at the University of Georgia are working with community planners and potential oyster farmers to understand the potential land-based components of marine oyster farms and how they can be integrated into Georgia's coastal communities. The project, funded by Georgia Sea Grant, aims to help communities navigate the legal framework for oyster farming and avoid conflicts with landowners. The researchers have identified a spectrum of land uses associated with oyster farming, from simple operations to fully integrated businesses, and are studying existing zoning codes in coastal counties to identify where these activities might be permitted. They plan to create guidance documents to support communities in revising their zoning codes to accommodate oyster farming.
