ASAJA-Cádiz, a agricultural and livestock association, has expressed concern over the significant decrease in the price of goat milk in the Sierra de Cádiz region, a key source of milk for cheese production. The drop in prices, which has also impacted producers in Malaga, is unfathomable given the reduced supply and increased demand for cheese, as well as rising feed and production costs. The association attributes the situation to an unexplained 5 cent decrease in the price of milk extract, falling from 0.17 cents to 0.12 cents per liter, and a broader 20 cent drop in the price of a liter of milk to 0.80 cents. This downward pressure on milk prices is detrimental to local goat farmers and undermines their already challenging livelihoods, particularly as the native goat population of the Sierra de Cádiz faces depletion. ASAJA-Cádiz has called for greater understanding and support for these farmers, highlighting their crucial contribution to the socioeconomic and environmental fabric of the Sierra Grazalema National Park.
