The USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service report reveals that China became the world's leading blueberry producer in 2021, with a planted area of 69,036 hectares, and consumed the most blueberries in 2021, driven by increased awareness of health benefits and higher living standards. Despite being a non-traditional fruit in China, blueberries are popular for their nutritional value and taste. The industry faces challenges such as land use policies and competition from imported blueberries, primarily from Peru and Chile, which enjoy free trade agreements and off-season availability. The report also highlights the entry of American blueberries into the Chinese market in 2020 and the introduction of a new variety called Peachy Blue in 2022.
