Chinese tariffs on Canadian canola stimulate alternative imports In August, China imposed preliminary anti-dumping duties on imports of canola from Canada. Combined with the previous duties (imposed in March 2025) on canola meal and oil from Canada, China has now imposed prohibitive duties on all Canadian canola products. China relies on imports of canola and canola products. Canola meal is a desirable feed for aquaculture because its amino acid profile is well-suited for feeding fish, in addition to fishmeal, which is a more expensive alternative. Canada supplied most of China's imported canola meal until May 2025, when the impact of the tariffs became noticeable. Domestic production of canola in China was insufficient to meet the demand for feed, and to ensure sufficient supply for the domestic industry, China is engaging with alternative trading partners to replace Canadian canola products.
