A prolonged heat wave from mid-summer to mid-September has led to poor crop yields and a scarcity of fruit and vegetable supplies, resulting in significantly higher prices for these items. The heat wave has adversely affected the production of key crops like cucumbers, zucchini, and paprika, with some farms ceasing shipments early. Consequently, prices for these vegetables have surged, with cucumbers and zucchini experiencing record-breaking price increases of 23.4% and 69.6% respectively compared to the previous year. The high prices are expected to persist due to the slow recovery from the adverse growth conditions. Additionally, the nighttime temperatures dropping below optimal growth conditions may further delay the recovery of affected crops, ensuring that consumers will continue to face high produce prices in the near future.
