The Vietnamese market has a growing demand for Korean seaweed, with imports of dried and seasoned seaweed increasing steadily. This popularity is due to the improving middle class purchasing power and the influence of the Korean Wave. Vietnam, despite being a major seaweed farmer and exporter, is becoming a significant importer of Korean seasoned seaweed. Korean companies like Seong Seong Seaweed, Oh Foods, Pure Eat, and CJ Foods, along with Japanese and Thai companies, are making inroads into the Vietnamese seaweed market. Vietnamese consumers, who value healthier food options and wrapping foods, find Korean seaweed appealing. The Korea Seaweed Industry Association recommends 'Gim' be written as 'seaweed leaf from the sea' in Vietnam to make the food more relatable to Vietnamese consumers.
