Vietnam and China recently implemented a protocol on plant quarantine with fresh watermelons, as watermelon exports from Vietnam to China have historically been unofficial and precarious. The protocol requires Vietnam to comply with China's laws, regulations, and standards related to food hygiene, safety, and plant quarantine, as well as implementing good agricultural practices. As a result of improved product quality and traceability, watermelon export turnover to China from Vietnam has increased significantly, with China being a popular market for this product especially during the Lunar New Year.
