In 2020, Vietnam saw a significant increase in the planted area of fruit trees, reaching 1.1 million hectares, and achieved higher yields and quality in most fruit varieties. However, despite this increase in production, exports did not rise, and the country fell short of its 5 billion U.S. dollars export plan for fruits and vegetables. This shortfall was largely due to a dramatic decrease in exports to China, though there was slight growth in other major markets like the European Union (EU). The EU is emerging as a more vigorous market for Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable products, thanks to the Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) with the EU, which has led to a 94% tax exemption on 547 tax items. Exports to the EU rose by 6% in the first eight months of the year, and it is projected that exports will increase by 42.7% by 2025, making the EU Vietnam's second largest export market.
