Vietnam has seen a significant increase in meat and meat product imports in the first half of the year, with a 23.9% year-on-year increase in volume and a 53.7% increase in value, reaching a total of 379,964 tons and US$750.7 million respectively. The average import price per ton was 1977 US dollars, a 24% increase from the previous year. India was the largest supplier of meat and meat products to Vietnam, followed by Russia, which was the largest supplier of pork. Vietnam's domestic pork production has surpassed 2 million tons, with an expected production of about 884,000 tons in the third quarter, due to a supply-demand gap, the country is likely to continue importing pork. Rabobank predicts that the strong import momentum could continue in the second half of the year, but the price of imported pork may fall due to weak Chinese demand and increased global competition.
