The Vietnam Sugar Association (VSSA) predicts that Vietnam will have an oversupply of sugar in 2023, with consumption demand expected to be 2.3 million tons and supply forecasted to be over 2.7 million tons. The excess supply includes imported sugar, smuggled sugar from the Southwest border, and sugar produced from sugarcane. The VSSA also warns about the increasing import of HFCS corn syrup, which has negatively impacted the sugar market share in the beverage industry and has prompted other ASEAN countries to restrict its import.
