A recent study conducted at Bartın University has identified the pest affecting saplings and walnut trees in Romania as the Asian Walnut Moth (Garella Musculana). This pest, originally from Central Asia, was first detected in Europe in 2008 in Ukraine, and later in Turkey and Bulgaria. The study, published in the European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization (EPPO) journal, marks the first detection of this pest in Romania during the 2018-2020 period. The research not only identifies the pest but also reveals the first world DNA sequences of the Asian Walnut Moth and documentes the eggs in color for the first time. The study is supported by the University and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, aiming to understand the damage caused by organisms in agricultural areas and develop strategies to combat pests.
