Belarus has seen a significant increase in the cultivation of sunflower seeds, with the planted area growing from 740 hectares in 2018 to 6,710 hectares in 2022, and yield increasing from 14.5 to 18.5 centners per hectare during the same period. This growth is attributed to climate change and increased farmer interest. However, the country's sunflower oil market is currently dominated by imports from Russia and Ukraine, with Belarus' production being only 1.2%. The Belarusian government recognizes the potential for increasing domestic production and improving the quality of sunflower seeds and oil. Challenges include the lack of an effective plant protection system and scaling-up technologies. The warmer climate and the positive experience gained so far suggest that Belarus could increase its share of the sunflower oil market, especially with the necessary support and improvements.
