Wet weather impacted cow comfort and productivity, causing a slowdown in overall milk production growth in February 2023 compared to the previous year. Despite this, U.S. milk production and cow numbers saw slight increases. Cow numbers in the U.S. were at their highest since May 2022, reaching 9.417 million, and in the major dairy states, reaching 8.939 million, the highest since August 2021. However, the increase in milk production per cow was minimal, and only Texas saw a significant increase. Milk production was up in 12 states, with Texas leading in volume growth, while California, New Mexico, and Florida experienced declines due to wet weather and lower cow numbers. Georgia and South Dakota experienced the highest year-over-year percentage milk growth.
