51% of South Africa's exported avocados come from Westfalia Fruit, which covers the entire industry chain from planting, harvesting, ripening, to packaging, processing, and marketing.
Westfalia owns approximately 2,500 hectares of avocado orchards in Africa, mainly located in Mozambique and South Africa, producing about 5 million boxes of avocados annually. The varieties planted include Hass, Fuerte, and Ryan, with most of the products intended for export.
To meet the growing demand for avocados, Westfalia is expanding its nurseries and planting areas. The diverse climate in South Africa allows for year-round avocado production in different regions. The company is working with local communities to expand planting areas, aiming to increase supply by the fourth quarter of 2026. Avocados in Mozambique ripen in the first quarter, and Westfalia plans to further expand its planting areas there.
In addition to fresh avocados, Westfalia also processes avocado paste and avocado oil (including crude oil, virgin oil, and refined oil) for use in the food and personal care industries. Due to the increasing market demand for avocado oil, the company is preparing to establish new processing plants in Mozambique and Kenya.
