International research confirms that music can have a stress-reducing effect on dairy cows. Particularly slow, gentle melodies can calm the animals, increase their milk yield, and improve their well-being. In contrast, vigorous, fast-paced music (such as rock) can induce more agitated behavior in cows. In the following, we review the latest international experiments in this area, with a particular focus on milk production and animal welfare. A Chinese study showed that listening to soft, monotonous melodies (such as Indian raga) increased GABA and serotonin levels in cows while reducing cortisol. In other experiments, playing classical music made the animals calmer, while fast-tempo music caused increased restlessness and activity. The literature emphasizes that the volume and tempo must be carefully selected: too fast or loud music can cause stress, so providing periods of silence is also essential.
