A large wheat field, China's largest in a desert environment, has been planted in the Taklimakan Desert's Makit county, Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region. The trial, funded by Shandong province, aims to combat desertification through sustainable agriculture, covering over 400 hectares and achieving an average yield of 4.4 metric tons per hectare. The project overcomes challenges such as shifting sands, low soil nutrients, and high evaporation rates by using innovative irrigation methods and technology for precise crop management. The long-term goal is to expand wheat planting across 3,333 hectares of desert land, supporting rural vitalization and agricultural productivity. This initiative is part of China's broader efforts to improve desert agriculture, including rapid rice cultivation in Hotan prefecture, showcasing advancements in desert farming technologies.
