The pig sector's concerns are expected to be marginalized at the upcoming EU agriculture ministers' meeting in Brussels, as attention is focused on the forthcoming CAP reform. The reform, which aims to balance environmental measures with agricultural premiums, has hit a roadblock due to divergent European opinions on the share of environmental measures from 2023. Federal Agriculture Minister Julia Klöckner has proposed postponing the mandatory allocation of funds for environmental measures until 2025, a move opposed by proponents of the Green Deal. Additionally, the meeting will address the boosting of European protein production, with debate around coupled payments and the abolition of these payments, as demanded by German beet farmers. EU Agriculture Commissioner Janusz Wojciechwski will provide an update on ongoing trade agreement negotiations with New Zealand, Australia, Vietnam, and African countries.
