The Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice & Dignity group (PMBEJD) has reported a slight monthly increase in food basket prices in South Africa, with remote areas experiencing higher prices than major metros. The cost of the average basket has risen by 7.3% or R281 in the past 11 months, while inflation was much lower. The group noted significant price hikes in certain food items and regions, highlighting the challenges for households with a high expenditure on food. The PMBEJD's findings underscore the strain on households, especially those with low incomes, due to rising food and non-food inflation, and the impact of transport issues in some areas on food availability and prices.
