China has emerged as the leading rice exporter to Africa, capitalizing on India's declining exports and strong demand in African countries. Chinese rice exports to Africa surged to 781,000 tons in 2017, a 10-fold increase from the previous year, making up 70% of China's total rice exports. This trend continues, with China exporting over 3 million tons of white rice in the last six months of 2019. Both China and India are exporting surplus rice stocks to Africa, with China targeting markets in Egypt, Benin, Senegal, Cote d'Ivoire, Somalia, and Liberia through the state-owned COFCO Group. Africa's rice demand is high due to its reliance on rice imports, which account for 20-30% of global rice imports, as domestic production fails to meet demand. Despite India's reduced market share, it remains a significant supplier, along with Thailand and Vietnam. The price advantage and ample supply of rice from China make it the preferred supplier in the African market.
