On the map of the global agribusiness, there are names that seem immovable, and yet some were born far from the traditional hubs of Europe or the United States. Such is the case of UPL Limited, an acronym for United Phosphorus Limited, an Indian company founded in 1969 by Rajnikant Shroff to produce red phosphorus in the city of Vapi. In just over half a century, it went from manufacturing basic chemicals to becoming one of the main suppliers of agricultural inputs worldwide. Headquartered in Mumbai, the company now has more than 14,000 employees, 43 production plants in 14 countries, and commercial presence in over 140 markets. The growth strategy was marked by acquisitions that gave it scale and portfolio. The biggest milestone was in 2019, when it bought Arysta LifeScience for 4.2 billion dollars, an operation that catapulted it among the giants of crop protection.
