In October, Molda's wholesale apple prices rose by 15-20%, with Gala variety increasing to 7 lei/kg ($0.36/kg). Large producers are hesitant to comment, awaiting export batches and noting lack of demand for price increases. The price hike is linked to increased energy costs passed on by storage owners, especially for Gala apples which make up 80% of demand. The apple market's pressure is alleviated by processing and there's an ongoing adaptation to market issues, with some storage owners investing in emergency backup power generators. There's also a strategy among some traders to avoid offering apples at low prices to foreign buyers, aiming to prevent a price war situation. From early November, Moldova starts delivering apples to non-traditional markets by sea, which might explain the slight price increase observed.
