Why has the price of inshell nuts fallen in Moldova?

In the last ten days of December, on the Moldovan fruit market, wholesale prices for walnuts in shell decreased by 15-17%. The prices that have fallen the most are low-quality, mixed-grade nuts collected from household plots and alleys along roads, offered to traders by small farms and intermediary procurers, EastFruit reports. Since the beginning of 2024, the average wholesale price for inshell nuts has stabilized at 33 lei/kg ($1.87/kg). At the same time, the average price for nut kernels has not changed since the first week of November last year - about 90 lei/kg ($5.07/kg). Judging by EastFruit monitoring data, despite a significant reduction in purchase prices, inshell walnuts on the Moldovan market in the first ten days of January 2024 are still 10% more expensive than in the same period of the three previous seasons.
