[Korea Farmers' News Reporter Seo Sang-hyun] With the discovery that a cookbook from around 1450, during the reign of King Munjong of Joseon, contains a recipe for kimchi, the history of kimchi in Korea is expected to be pushed back by approximately 300 years from the existing academic theory. The World Kimchi Research Institute (Director Jang Hae-chun) announced on the 12th new research results showing that the origin of kimchi dates back to the mid-15th century, about 300 years earlier than previously recognized by the academic community. This is a new revelation correcting the distorted history of kimchi due to citation errors in Chinese literature during the Joseon Dynasty. Until now, academia had dated the origin of kimchi to 1766, when it was recorded in the "Supplement to the Mountain and Forest Economy."
