【Yeongwol】Yeongwol County announced on the 10th that it will be pushing forward with the 'Biochar Utilization Soil Environment Improvement and Low-Carbon Agriculture Technology Demonstration Project' to improve the soil in greenhouses. In this demonstration project, 48 farms (13 hectares) that grow crops such as tomatoes and cucumbers in greenhouses will participate. Utilizing biochar helps reduce the emission of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide, prevents soil acidification, improves soil pH, and enhances the nutrient retention capacity, thereby improving the crop growth environment. Deputy Director Jeong Ui-woong of the Income Support Division stated, "Biochar is a carbon material made by thermally decomposing plant resources such as rice straw and wood at over 350°C under oxygen-free conditions, and when applied to farmland, it fixes carbon in the soil, effectively reducing greenhouse gas emissions" and "We will continue to make efforts to expand the eco-friendly agricultural base."
