The British Cattle Movement Service has reported a slight decrease of 0.8% in the GB milking herd to 1.63 million head as of January, the smallest decline since January 2018. Despite this, the 2-4 year old category grew by 1.7%. However, older groupings saw a decline. The youngstock population experienced a quarter-on-quarter drop for only the second time since January 2020, falling by 0.7%, but was up 1.1% from the previous year. The 12-18 months sub-grouping saw a 4.8% increase, the largest in 10 years, helping to offset the decline in the 0-1 grouping.
