Peruvian Avocado Exports Expected to Reach USD 970 Million in 2024

In 2024, Peru is expected to maintain its position as the world's second-largest avocado exporter, with exports estimated to reach around USD 970 million, 0.62% year-over-year (YoY) higher than the USD 964 million recorded in 2023. Despite a 10% YoY decrease in export volume to 540 thousand tons caused by the El Niño phenomenon and resulting higher temperatures, the average export price is expected to increase by 14% YoY to USD 1.8 per kilogram (kg). Peru's main avocado export markets remain in the European Union (EU) and the United States (US). Moreover, Peru achieved its highest avocado production on record during 2023, totaling 911.2 thousand tons, with La Libertad, Lambayeque, Lima, and Ica as the top-producing regions.

Kenyan Avocado Season Started Successfully Despite Global Shipping Challenges

The Kenyan avocado season has begun positively, with significant shipments to the EU, the Middle East, Asia, Turkey, and Russia. However, challenges in logistics have emerged due to the Red Sea crisis, leading to longer transit times to European ports. This crisis has created delays in securing empty refrigerated containers for shipping from the Port of Mombasa and extended transit times to key markets. Despite these challenges, the quality and volume of Kenyan avocados remain high, and the market remains receptive to the crop. Kenyan avocado exporters and growers are extending the fruit's time on the trees to take advantage of the more profitable harvest period from Jul-24 to Nov-24. Both groups see this as a temporary issue that will eventually be resolved.

Ugandan Farmers Urged to Conserve Avocado Varieties Amid Rising Demand

Uganda's National Agricultural Advisory Services is urging farmers and individuals to conserve local avocado varieties due to increased demand due to avocado oil processing facilities. The leading processor of Uganda processes 160 thousand kilograms (kg) daily, benefiting 22 million farmers annually. The economic potential of local and Hass avocados is projected to contribute USD 4 million to the Ugandan economy.
