Turkish Initiative Boosts Hazelnut Production and Quality Through Modern Orchards

The Turkish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry is implementing the "Hazelnut Orchards Rehabilitation Project" to enhance hazelnut production within the country. The project represents a significant effort by the Turkish government to revitalize Türkiye's hazelnut industry. By focusing on yield improvement, quality enhancement, cost reduction, and modernization, the project seeks to improve the livelihoods of hazelnut producers and ensure the continued success of this important agricultural sector. Establishing new modern orchards is a key aspect of the initiative, promoting more efficient and productive cultivation practices.

By facilitating mechanization and creating layouts conducive to easier agricultural practices, the project aims to reduce production costs for hazelnut farmers.

Old and unproductive hazelnut orchards, particularly those on slopes, are being replaced with terraces to improve land management. Existing orchards with declining productivity due to aging are also being renewed. The project, launched in 2021, offers 100% grant support to participating producers. As of Apr-24, renovation work has been completed on 25 hectares (ha) of land across orchards belonging to 34 producers in 9 districts. Plans are underway to renew another 10 ha within the year. Applications for participation in the project are open until April 30, 2024.

The project aims to empower producers to generate higher profits by improving hazelnut yields and reducing production costs. Modernization efforts are expected to enhance the ease of agricultural practices, contributing to overall operational efficiency. Establishing modern orchards with high productivity per unit area is expected to ensure the long-term sustainability of hazelnut production in Türkiye.
