Meanwhile, the Philippines is set to ratify an FTA with South Korea by mid-2024, aiming to eliminate tariffs on agricultural goods and increase exports of processed pineapple to South Korea.

Joint LPNM-University Project Aims to Increase Pineapple Harvest in Malaysia

The Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board (LPNM) has provided over USD 147.4 thousand (MYR 700,000) to Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Johor for a pineapple seed cultivation project. Part of the National Economic Recovery Plan (PENJANA), this funding supports two projects such as the MD2 pineapple expansion project and the MD2 pineapple seed cultivation program. The Johor government plans to utilize the state’s unused land for farming to enhance agricultural productivity. The partnership involves Johor Pineapple Entrepreneurs Association (PPNNJ) members cultivating MD2 pineapples on 8 hectares (ha) of UiTM-owned land in Segamat, with guidance from LPNM. The project aims to increase pineapple production in the state and increase farmers' income. If successful, the initiative may expand to other unused lands, including those owned by educational institutions, police training centers, and military camps. UiTM intends to make the project more community-centric and bridge the gap between the university, government agencies, and the community.

Philippines Prepares to Ratify FTA in South Korea To Increase Pineapple Exports

The Philippines is preparing to ratify a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with South Korea by the middle of 2024. While the Senate President anticipated ratification in Jan-24, the Senate has yet to introduce a resolution. However, there are no expected issues, as both sides have agreed on a focused deal. The FTA aims to eliminate tariffs on agricultural goods, including pineapples, upon entry into force. Under this agreement, the Philippines aims to increase exports of processed pineapple and other fruits to South Korea.
