In W22 in the peanut landscape, some of the most relevant trends included:
India's favorable early monsoon conditions have boosted optimism among peanut farmers in Rayalaseema, particularly in drought-prone Anantapur, India's top peanut-producing district. After years of erratic rainfall and crop failures, timely pre-monsoon showers and the early onset of the Southwest monsoon have encouraged early sowing across the region, which accounts for 72% of Andhra Pradesh's peanut cultivation. Government-subsidized seed distribution and renewed national focus on peanut seed production have further supported farmer confidence. Rayalaseema's high-oil-content peanut seeds remain in strong demand from states like Gujarat and Maharashtra.
Peanut production in Paraguay has expanded significantly in recent years, driven by the crop's resilience to adverse weather and its adaptability to various soils and rotations. As of W22, Paraguay exports approximately 12,000 metric tons (mt) of peanuts annually, generating around USD 18 million, with the Netherlands and Russia as leading buyers. Cultivation is concentrated in San Pedro, using direct sowing on crop stubble such as corn and wheat. Several Brazilian peanut varieties, including OL3 and Granoleico, are well-suited to local conditions.
Despite a slight dip in exports in 2024 compared to 2023, the long-term trend shows strong growth. Domestic consumption remains modest, around 2,000 mt annually, with most production destined for export. Paraguay is exploring new markets such as China, Taiwan, and Peru, while also expanding value-added processing, including blanched peanut production. Though its output remains small compared to regional producers like Argentina, Paraguay's peanut sector shows strong growth potential and increasing international engagement.
Peanut consumption continues to rise, particularly among millennials, following a decade of strategic marketing. According to the National Peanut Board's (NPB) recent Brand Tracking Study, 85% of adults in the United States (US) have consumed or purchased peanuts in the past month. Among millennials (ages 29 to 44), 48% now eat peanuts weekly and 65% consume peanut butter weekly, both figures marking notable increases since 2021. This surge in demand reinforces peanuts' position as a leading nut among the United States (US) consumers, suggesting sustained domestic market strength.
Meanwhile, ongoing US-Vietnam trade negotiations could affect peanut-related trade flows. Vietnam seeks to avoid a proposed 46% tariff, paused until Jul-25, amid concerns over its export-driven economic model. The outcome may have implications for peanut and related agricultural trade between the two countries.
Between Jan-25 and Apr-25, Uzbekistan exported 5.2 thousand mt of peanuts worth USD 4.9 million, according to the National Statistics Committee (UzStat). Kazakhstan was the largest importer, receiving 2.1 thousand mt. Other major destinations included Azerbaijan with 629 mt, Russia with 533 mt, Pakistan with 497 mt, and Turkmenistan with 417 mt. An additional 958 mt were exported to various other countries.

US peanut prices fell to USD 0.55 per kilogram (kg) in W22, marking a decrease of 1.79% both week-on-week (WoW) and year-on-year (YoY) from USD 0.56/kg. Farmer stock prices declined slightly, while marketings dropped to 59.4 million pounds (lbs), a 38% WoW decrease, signaling reduced selling activity. Improved soil moisture from Apr-25 rains supported early planting in the Southwest, though excess moisture delayed some fieldwork and triggered early weed issues. If favorable conditions continue, yields may rise, pressuring prices further. However, input costs and disease risks could limit supply gains.
In W22, Brazil's peanut prices declined by 7.48% WoW to USD 2.97/kg, despite marking a 19.28% increase YoY. This short-term price correction reflects recent market adjustments but may be temporary. Persistent rainfall in key producing regions is threatening the ongoing harvest, raising concerns about potential delays and quality deterioration. If adverse weather continues, reduced supply could reverse the current downward trend and drive prices higher in the coming weeks.
Authorities and agribusinesses should expand support for high-oil-content peanut seed distribution in Rayalaseema, especially Anantapur, to capitalize on favorable monsoon conditions and strong interstate demand. Facilitating supply chain linkages with major buyers in Gujarat and Maharashtra will ensure sustained farmer incentives and improve income stability.
Paraguayan exporters and processors should accelerate efforts to access emerging markets such as China, Taiwan, and Peru while expanding value-added processing capabilities (e.g., blanched peanuts). These steps will reduce dependence on traditional buyers and enhance long-term competitiveness despite modest domestic consumption.
Peanut industry stakeholders in exporting countries should develop marketing and product innovation strategies tailored to US millennial preferences, such as high-protein snacks and sustainably sourced peanut products. Leveraging this demographic’s growing consumption can unlock premium market opportunities and support export expansion.
