In W29 in the mango landscape, during the first half of 2023, Brazilian mango exports showed a positive trend, with over 71 thousand metric tons (mt) exported, marking a 7% increase compared to the same period in 2022. This performance ranks as the second-best in history for the semester, just below the record set in 2021. Additionally, revenues from these exports amounted to USD 68.4 million, reflecting a 12% increase year-on-year (YoY). The improved pace of shipments is attributed to higher fruit quality and reduced logistical difficulties compared to the previous year. Monthly shipments reached their peak for the year in June.
Spain's mango production, mainly centered in Malaga, is expected to decrease between 60% and 70%, below its potential of 40 thousand tons in the upcoming campaign due to drought and poor flowering caused by adverse weather in May and June. The Axarquia region in Malaga, which accounts for most of Spain's mango production, is facing water scarcity and the reservoir of La Viñuela is at only 9% of its capacity, leading to restrictions to prevent shortages. The drought cycle, which started in 2019, is exacerbating the situation and this decline in production will lead to increased mango imports from other countries during the Spanish mango season. Furthermore, the XIII International Mango Symposium will be held in Malaga, Spain, from September 29 to October 3, 2023. Organized by the La Mayora Institute of Subtropical and Mediterranean Horticulture, the event aims to bring together international experts in mango research, innovation, production, and marketing.
The Egyptian mango season commences from July 20 and extends until the end of 2023, with over 50 countries receiving shipments. Egypt produces more than 200 varieties of mangoes, with Awees, Fas, Taymour, Alfons, Hendi Menshawi, and others being popular locally, and Kent, Keitt, Heidi, and Tommy Atkins among foreign varieties. With a total mango cultivation area of 130.20 thousand hectares (ha) and a production of 1.20 million metric tonnes (mmt) in 2020, the 2023 production is estimated to be 2 mmt.
Myanmar's Sein Ta Lone mango variety continues to find China as its most important export market in the first half of 2023. With over 400 native mango varieties in Myanmar, Sein Ta Lone mangoes have seen substantial exports to China, with convenient transportation, low freight costs, and guaranteed freshness attracting Chinese consumers. Shan State has exported over 2 thousand metric tons (mt) of Sandelong mangoes to China this year, with transportation through the land border being the primary method. Mango exporters in Myanmar are committed to improving product packaging to enhance the demand of Chinese consumers and promote mango exports further. Lastly, the mango season in Senegal saw a successful campaign, with exports ending in the southern region by June 20 and continuing in the central and northern regions. Despite sufficient rainfalls, phytosanitary problems, such as fruit flies, disrupted production. However, new fertilizers and treatment products increased yields by 15%. The demand for Senegalese mangoes remained strong, leading to successful sales in neighboring countries like Mauritania and Morocco. Export volumes to Europe were lower due to taxes imposed on mango exports to combat fruit flies, leading some producers to sell locally. The campaign faced disruptions from demonstrations and roadblocks in June. Despite challenges, the overall assessment of the season is positive and promising, with plans to strengthen markets in the region and Western Europe.
