Egypt

Egyptian Yellow Onion Price Increased by USD 100/MT Due to Increased Demand From Europe (Feb 13)

The yellow onion price in Egypt increased aggressively from USD 300/MT to USD 400/MT FOB due to the increased demand for onions from Europe while Egypt's production in 2023 decreased as farmers suffered losses last season due to the lack of demand and reduced planted hectares.

Georgia

Onion Prices Reach Record High in Georgia (Feb 13)

In January, Georgia imported the largest quantity of onions since 2014. The wholesale prices of onions have increased to a record high, for an average of USD 0.87/kg (GEL 2.3/kg). 

Libya

Libya Seized Imported Egyptian Onions That Are Unfit for Consumption (Feb 13)

The official spokesman of the Libyan Food and Drug Control Center (FDCC) stated that onions unfit for human consumption entered Libya from Egypt. FDCC has organized a campaign targeting vegetable markets in the capital, such as the Janzour and Sunday markets (Sug Al-Ahad). The campaign aims to ensure the safety of the onions traded in the markets. 

Moldova

Onion Prices Are Rising Rapidly in Moldova (Feb 13)

In Moldova, onion prices started to rise after W3. Prices for onions of all quality types have increased by 10-12% to USD 0.48-0.53/kg (MDL 9-10/kg). In W7, the average price for onions on the Moldovan market has been USD 0.43-0.48/kg (MDL 8-9/kg). 

In Moldova, the Area Under Onions Will Increase by a Third (Feb 15)

In Moldova, the active period of selling seed material for sowing early vegetables has ended. Managers of importing inputs for agricultural production reported, farmers purchased onion seeds by around 30% more than in 2022. Onion sowing will begin in March and will end in the same month. 

Morocco

Export of Vegetables to West Africa, Suspended (Feb 13)

In Morocco, the Autonomous Control and Coordination Establishment of agricultural and food export products (Morocco Foodex) reported the sales of onions, tomatoes, and potatoes destined for the West African market are banned until further notice. The ban is due to the rise of tomato prices on the local market due to the reduction in domestic supply caused by a cold wave affecting the Souss-Massa region, which accounts for 90% of the national production. 

Netherlands

More European Interest in Dutch Onions (Feb 17)

Despite the limited supply and high market prices, the export of Dutch onions has been successful. Belgium, Great Britain, and Germany have purchased more onions from the Netherlands than in previous years. As of W3, the Netherlands exported 86.6K tonnes of onions to Great Britain, an increase of 6K tonnes compared to 2022. A total of 40K tons of onions have been exported to Belgium, almost double compared to 2022. The demand from Germany has increased since the 2022 harvest. 

Philippines

In Philippines, Onion Prices Dropped to USD 5.44/kg in Cebu (Feb 13)

In Cebu, the price of onions has decreased by more than 50%. From USD 14.52/kg (PHP 800/kg) for red onions last December to USD 5.44/kg (PHP 300/kg) on W7. In early January, 21K tons of onions were approved for import. However, department officials reported barely half of the cargo arrived, and onions were distributed in the National Capital Region.

Ukraine

Onion Prices in Ukraine Reach Record Levels Since the Country’s Independence (Feb 13)

In W7, selling prices of onions in Ukraine set another record at USD 0.82-0.95/kg (UAH 30-35/kg), an increase of 11% WoW. The cost of onions is forecasted to continue rising, as the demand for onions is high and Ukrainian farms are running out of stock.
