The European Commission has proposed a new Regulation to simplify the system of Geographical Indications (GI) for agricultural products, wines, and alcoholic beverages. The proposal aims to delegate part of the authorization process of Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) and Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) products to the European Patent Office (Euipo). The Commission also seeks to define the term "evocation" of a protected denomination and include consumer and retail sales representatives in consortia. The proposal also includes rules for the online protection of PDO and PGI products. However, the proposal has received opposition from 15 countries, including Italy, who do not share the proposed reform of the PDO and PGI system.
