The chief executive of Abitrigo, former ambassador Rubens Barbosa, stated that the demand for wheat flour has remained unchanged over the last four years in the country and, therefore, there is no surprise in the milling numbers. “Even in a period of several occurrences that shook the world scenario of wheat, such as the conflict between Russia and Ukraine and also the crop failure in Argentina, which had a direct impact on the price of the commodity, consumption did not suffer a considerable change. This shows that, in a situation where the average income of the population is low, the demand for wheat flour remains stable”, he says. In 2021, the mills processed 12.7 million tons, and, in the previous year, 12.6 million. Cereal processing yielded 8.5 million tons of flour.
