Italy's bluefin tuna allocation quota amounts to 4,745 tons for 2022. Italy received the third highest quota after France and Spain with 25.57% of the EU share. Although the 16th of June was the official day for the opening of bluefin tuna fishing, the allocation quota went public on May 26th and 5 days later the total amount allocated to Italian boats had already been reached, thus leaving many licensed fishers empty-handed. In July there was a temporary re-opening of the quota which amounted to 600mt. The rise in fuel fuel prices and the reduced amount of tons allocated to Italy had dissuaded many fishers from participating in the catch of tuna for the 2022 season. The 2022 season has officially closed.
