Tanzania’s Avocado industry is among the fastest-growing sub-sectors in the horticultural industry in the country presented by growing demand in the international market with the commodity’s main export market being in Europe. Data from the Tanzania Horticultural Association (Taha), as well as the Avocado Catalog 2020 report, show that avocado exports jumped from 1,877 tonnes in 2014 to 9,000 tonnes in 2019, fetching the country $12 million in 2019.
Tanzania holds a unique seasonal window for its avocados, from December to March in the Southern Highlands(Mbeya and Njombe) and May to August in Kilimanjaro, both of which are the major producing regions. Our products are sourced directly from highly trained farmers of the Southern Zone, Mbeya, Songwe, and Njombe regions in Tanzania following the strict fair trade business principle.
Our Tanzanian Avocados are grown in plantations set at altitudes ranging from 1,100 to 1,900 meters ordnance datum, with an annual rainfall of around 800 to 1,200 mm. The majority of growers of Avocados are small and medium-scale farmers.
After maturity (20% - 25% Dry matter) of the fruit in the field is tested, harvesting is done using hands supported by special equipment such as a pole with a net for the tall trees. Then, fruits are packed at warehouses in Njombe and Mbeya. Our Avocados are sorted and graded according to weight (size codes) and external appearance/quality free from blemishes/spots.
