The Thai government is buying tilapia from rivers at a low price of 15 baht per kilo to encourage people to catch an invasive species of tilapia, the blackchin tilapia, which is originally from Africa. This species is causing harm to native Thai fish by eating their eggs, putting fishermen's livelihoods at risk. The Department of Fisheries has labeled it an invasive species and is taking measures to control its population, such as releasing predator fish. The source of the sudden increase of this species in Thailand and other Asian countries, including Taiwan, is under investigation.
