A webinar held in January 2023, copyrighted under an agreement between Informa Markets and the University of Minnesota, discussed the advancements in the development of a vaccine for African swine fever (ASF). Manuel Borca, a veterinary microbiologist from the USDA ARS, highlighted the complexity of the ASF virus and the lack of research as the main reasons for the slow vaccine development. He mentioned that attenuated adenovirus-based vaccines are showing promise. The USDA ARS has developed five experimental vaccine candidates, one of which has been transferred to a commercial partner in Vietnam for further testing. Dr. Arkin Wu from Pipestone Nutrition and Riverstone Farms (China) pointed out the severe impact of ASF on the Chinese swine industry due to a lack of effective vaccines or treatments. He stressed that the development of an ASF vaccine could significantly benefit this industry.
